Celebrating Safely This Holiday Season

The holiday season is here, bringing with it festive gatherings, holiday decorations, and plenty of celebrations. While this time of year is filled with joy, it’s important to prioritize safety in both the workplace and at home. Here are a few things to keep in mind to keep your celebrations safe:

1. Ensure Emergency Exits Are Unobstructed

Whether you’re hosting a holiday event or attending one, make sure you’re staying Code compliant by ensuring emergency exits are always clear and accessible. Paths to exits must always remain unobstructed, especially in crowded settings like holiday parties or office gatherings. Take a moment to inspect the space and ensure everyone has a clear route to safety in case of an emergency.

2. Decorate Responsibly

Holiday lights are a beautiful way to decorate for the season, but make sure you’re staying safe by following proper electrical safety guidelines. Avoid overloading circuits and always use certified lights (look for the CSA certification). Be sure to turn off lights when not in use, especially in public or commercial spaces, to reduce the risk of fire.

3. Check Fire Safety Systems

With more electrical devices in use—like holiday lights, cooking appliances, and space heaters—be sure to test your smoke detectors before the holiday season begins. Also, check that your fire protection systems, including sprinklers, are functioning properly. This simple check can make all the difference in an emergency situation.

4. Know the Evacuation Plan

In the excitement of holiday events, safety protocols can easily be overlooked. Make sure you’re staying compliant by ensuring that everyone in your building knows the evacuation plan and where emergency exits are located. If you’re hosting an event, make sure attendees are aware of the emergency routes and procedures in case of a fire or other emergency.

5. Keep Fire Extinguishers Visible

Fire extinguishers should always be within easy reach, especially in areas with a higher risk of fire, like kitchens. Before your holiday gatherings, double-check that fire extinguishers are up-to-date and easily accessible.  Make sure your guests know where the extinguishers are located and how to use them if necessary.

6. Use Space Heaters with Caution

Space heaters are often used to warm up chilly areas, but use them with caution. Ensure that they are placed far away from any combustible materials—like decorations, furniture, or paper—and never leave them unattended. Also, avoid placing space heaters near emergency exits, as they could block access during an evacuation.

This holiday season, take a little extra time to check your safety measures.

The team at CodeNext is always here to guide you through the latest safety protocols, especially the Building and Fire Code requirements. Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season!
