The CodeNext Roadshow: Bringing the 2024 Ontario Building Code Updates Across Ontario
This year has been a whirlwind for the CodeNext Roadshow! We’ve been traveling across Ontario, connecting with industry professionals and diving into the upcoming changes in the Ontario Building Code (OBC). From Ottawa to Toronto, and everywhere in between, it's been an incredible experience to meet so many of you face-to-face, answer your questions, and discuss how these changes will impact our industry.
With the new code coming into effect on January 1, 2025, this is a crucial time for architects, engineers, and builders across the province to get familiar with what’s ahead.
Key Dates to Remember:
Now Until December 31, 2024:
Permit applications must be submitted under the existing 2012 Building Code. This is the last date to submit applications using the current standards, so if you’re finalizing projects this year, now is the time to ensure compliance with the existing code.
Transition Period - January 1, 2025, to March 31, 2025:
Starting January 1, 2025, the 2024 Building Code officially comes into effect, but there's a three-month grace period. During this time, permit applications can be submitted under either the 2012 or 2024 Building Code. However, if you choose to use the 2012 version, you’ll need to demonstrate that your working drawings were substantially complete by December 31, 2024.
After April 1, 2025:
All new permit applications must comply with the 2024 Ontario Building Code. This means that any projects submitted after this date will need to fully adhere to the updated requirements, so it’s essential to get up to speed with the new changes now.
Thank you to everyone who has attended our presentations this year! We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow with you. And as always, if you have questions about the 2024 OBC, feel free to reach out to the CodeNext team. Let’s move forward together, adapting to these changes and continuing to build safer spaces across Ontario!
